Session 5: Assignment One Question

Question:
This week we learned about the basic structure of a relational database design. As a review, read the following short article which I extracted from a Microsoft Access tutorial on the Microsoft Office web site."Relational databases organize data into tables, where each table contains lists of rows and columns similar to a spreadsheet. Each table strictly contains information about one kind of object only.""In a simple database, you might have only one table. For most databases you will need more than one. For example, you might have a table that stores information about products, another table that stores information about orders, and another table with information about customers. In a relational database, we do not mix information about two different objects (e.g. orders and customers) in a single table."
"There are two basic principles behind relational database design. The first principle is that duplicate information (also called redundant data) is bad, because it wastes space and increases the likelihood of errors and inconsistencies. The second principle is that the correctness and completeness of information is important. If your database contains incorrect information, any reports that pull information from the database will also contain incorrect information. As a result, any decisions you make that are based on those reports will then be misinformed.""A good database design is, therefore, one that:* Divides your information into subject-based tables to reduce redundant data.* Provides the database management system (e.g. ACCESS) with the information it requires to join the information in the tables together as needed.* Helps support and ensure the accuracy and integrity of your information.* Accommodates your data processing and reporting needs."(Reference: http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/access/HA012242471033.aspx?pid=CH100645691033#Good)Think of the small database we used in our lab exercise - Products and Suppliers. Briefly describe how this database observes any two of the four design principles outlined above.

The information of products and suppliers is stored in subject-based tables Products and Suppliers respectively. It eliminate data redundancy in the database.

Both of the products and suppliers table can obtain data accuracy once the product information or supplier information are changed since these informations are reference by the key ProductID and Supplier Number respectively.

Session 4 - Assignment One Question

Question:
Find one example of Internet marketing that you think is particularly effective and one example that is ineffective. Explain your reasons, for example, you can describe how well the effective example takes advantage of the Internet's properties (e.g. interactivity, personalization, greater hold on user's interest). For the ineffective ad, you may describe how you can improve on it.

Effective Scenario -
Hong Kong Dragon Airline Limited - e-ticketing system

Facilitates customers to have their airline tickets booked through their web site on Internet instead of booking it via the agents.
the ticket selling performance through airline ticket agent will be affected by the agent’s preference or judgment which in turn the airline is in a passive situation to the market share and is hard to increase it.
booking through Internet not only exposing the company brand to the customer in a direct way, but also minimizing the chance of the other airline brand dominated in certain agent, e-ticketing system also increase the competitiveness in airline industry. The process is shortened where the customer have to call their agent to book the ticket and wait for confirmation by the return call in the past. The phone calls turn around happened in common when the flight on specific date is not available, the system provides interface for the user to book their tickets on Internet and they can make any changes to their route if the flight is not available or any changes the user want to make. This made Dragon air more competitive to the others by providing a convenience channel for the customer to book tickets, the system can serve the bookings in some urgent flight to the customers by several clicks in their web application also the system is also serve business trip purpose by providing details departure and arrival flights detail to them and the businessmen can organize their schedule in a more efficient and convenient way, some add-on features to the systems: Registered members of the system (e.g. Marco Polo members, however this membership will share the usage with its parent airline, Cathay Pacific) can reserve a specific seat in any class tickets (e.g. first-class, business class, or economy class). This special arrangement is dominated in the Asia airline where the other airline does not provide this service at the moment. This add-on feature dominated Dragon air from the other airline in Asia.

Ineffective Scenario -

Royal Caribbean Cruises
one of the brands under RCCL which went public and trade on the NY Stock Exchange in 1993 is going to enhance customers and travel trade experience by providing better arrangement based on customers’ preferences, reduce costs by implemented supply chain management system to provide advance booking features, and increase its revenues by satisfying their customers’ needs who were willing to pay a higher price to get a better cruising and vacation experience. However, it faced technological challenge that all data access is independently in the company and is locked up in system and inaccessible situation. The data between system is not synchornise which it made the IT projects not align with company goal.

Suggestion to the Scenario –

New tools, such as time management processes and program management office were installed to provide better controls over IT’s efficiency and productivity supply chain automation and simplification of the shore side purchasing and procurement process, employee systems focused on resources arrangement, web-enabled reservation system of customer where the data is centralized and business users can access the information through a single source, re-organise those suggestion to make it in a smooth paragraph.

Session 3: Assignment One Question

Question:
This week we talked about Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as a process and as a software application. Based on the CRM concepts learned, answer the following questions: List the customer data elements generated when a customer interacts with an airline by (a) making a reservation, (b) using frequent flyer miles, and (c) completing a flight. How does information from CRM improve these interactions ?What are the benefits of integrating the sales, marketing and customer support function using a single software package and a centralized database ?

(a) Making a reservation:
- Name, age, gender, contact information, email address and financial particular.
(b) Using frequent flyer miles:
- Type of membership name and number and point of miles in the current account.
(c) Completing a flight:
- Personal particular of customer has completed who should fill in customer's login name and its password as well as choosing what the customer would like to get.

For the sales, marketing and customer support function using a single software package and a centralized database that business may effectively manage the operation, the security would be higher and the easier for administration. Then, learner can get and understand most of knowledge in single system. Even changed department, it also will not affect the operation and the data and file connect either.

Session 2: Assignment One Question

Question:

Answer the following questions after viewing the video:

1. Which departments within the company are integrated within the Order-to-Delivery process ?

Session 1: Assignment One Question

Question:
Think of a business or organization that you admire, then describe two examples of how that business is supported by information systems. For example, do they use it for operational excellence ? Or do they use it to create new products and services ?

As per the organization that I admire the most, department stores are the most successful and the best in using the application of information system in the world. There is millions of various products and stocks at department stores, the application records the detail information of each products and getting the data of stock volume. Also, it is enable for management, administrative and trading. We may know that current and update information via the application; every trading record would be on the database.

Such as MACY in USA is the most presentation of using information system in the world, many various products are from different places or countries, in used to that application, it’s very effective to get detail of where the product from, how’s the trading record of that product, the date of inward and how many stock volume in warehouse.

The following of the application may shown that detail information for trading in business:
- Trading by credit card (Visa/Master card)
- Checking stock in warehouse
- Selling and buying record
- Location of product
- Date of inward/ outward
- Place of stock from
- Expiry date of product (e.g. foods, medical)

And, the method of checking the information of product, it is marked a label with barcode system on it and check it information by barcode machine hence one label, one machine may convenience to get the detail of the product like price, volume, expiry and something else.
