Session 1: Assignment One Question

Question:
Think of a business or organization that you admire, then describe two examples of how that business is supported by information systems. For example, do they use it for operational excellence ? Or do they use it to create new products and services ?

As per the organization that I admire the most, department stores are the most successful and the best in using the application of information system in the world. There is millions of various products and stocks at department stores, the application records the detail information of each products and getting the data of stock volume. Also, it is enable for management, administrative and trading. We may know that current and update information via the application; every trading record would be on the database.

Such as MACY in USA is the most presentation of using information system in the world, many various products are from different places or countries, in used to that application, it’s very effective to get detail of where the product from, how’s the trading record of that product, the date of inward and how many stock volume in warehouse.

The following of the application may shown that detail information for trading in business:
- Trading by credit card (Visa/Master card)
- Checking stock in warehouse
- Selling and buying record
- Location of product
- Date of inward/ outward
- Place of stock from
- Expiry date of product (e.g. foods, medical)

And, the method of checking the information of product, it is marked a label with barcode system on it and check it information by barcode machine hence one label, one machine may convenience to get the detail of the product like price, volume, expiry and something else.

  1. Yes, most well-established retailers have computerized point-of-sale systems, inventory control systems and even warehouse management systems, as you have described.
